The Q Dining Canberra Review: Modern Vietnamese & MSG-Free Stylish Dining

    ✅ May 2026 Update:

This post was originally written on Google Blogger in December 2025 and has now been migrated to WordPress with updated 2026 insights. While the specific set menus and dishes we tried six months ago have likely transitioned to a new seasonal lineup, the overall high standards of The Q Dining remain consistent.

Given the exceptional service and sophisticated atmosphere we experienced, we have no doubt that the food quality remains as impressive as ever. Furthermore, as of May 2026, they continue to hold a strong 4.8-star rating on Google, which proves they are successfully maintaining their reputation. This review serves as a reliable reference for anyone seeking a premium dining experience in Canberra.

Upscale Vietnamese Restaurant in Woden, Canberra

I usually choose Vietnamese food when I want something light, fresh, and full of vegetables. While many people think of Vietnamese food as quick and affordable, The Q Dining offers an upscale Vietnamese dining experience. It’s a stylish, high-quality restaurant. Another big plus for health-conscious diners is that they don’t use MSG, making it a great choice for clean and mindful eating.

The Q Dining Vibe and Dress Code Tips for Diners

The atmosphere is sophisticated and polished. Regarding the dress code, there wasn’t a strict limit. Since it’s summer, I saw women in sundresses and men in dress shorts. It’s pretty relaxed, but since the place has a nice vibe, I’d suggest wearing neat shoes rather than flip-flops or Crocs.

Booking Tips: The $80 Minimum Spend Confusion

I booked online and got a reminder email saying there was a $80 minimum spend per person, which was unexpected since I haven’t really seen any other place with a minimum spend limit like that. However, when I asked at the restaurant, they said it was just a default setting on the booking platform and not their actual policy. If you want to avoid this confusion, it’s better to call them directly to book. The place is spacious with over 10 tables inside and a nice outdoor seating area.

Choosing Between the $72 Tasting Menu and $86 Feed Me Menu

The Q Dining menu shows $72 Tasting Menu and $86 Feed Me Menu options

Choosing between the $72 Tasting Menu and the $86 Feed Me Menu.

If you’re not sure what to order, the set menus are usually a safe bet. When I visited, there were two options:

    • $72 Tasting Menu: 6 courses (including dessert)
    • $86 Feed Me Menu: 5 courses (including dessert)

Both looked great, but I went with the $86 Feed Me Menu simply thinking, “The more expensive one must be better!”

Feed Me Menu Appetisers: Kingfish Crudo and Wagyu Beef Lá Lốt

    Appetiser 1: Kingfish Crudo

Fresh kingfish slices served with a mild coconut sauce and green chilli. The first bite reminded me of a Green Curry—it had that familiar, exotic Thai-style flavour. The finely diced green mango and pickles added a really nice crunch and freshness to the dish.

Appetiser 2: Wagyu Beef Lá Lốt

Beef “sausages” served on top of crispy rice noodles with a subtle, savoury peanut sauce. The fresh herbs made it a good combination of flavours. I tried to wrap it up like a traditional wrap, but it wasn’t easy, so I ended up eating the components separately. The balance of flavours was still excellent.

Main Courses: Lemongrass Baked Snapper and Crispy Pork Belly Platter

Main 1: Lemongrass Chilli Baked Snapper (with charred broccolini)

This snapper was perfectly cooked—crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. It’s baked with lemongrass, ginger, and other aromatics. The charred broccolini on the side was seasoned with just enough salt to go perfectly with steamed rice. Mixing the fish with the pickled radish, carrots, and grilled onions was the highlight of the meal.

Main 2: Five Spice Crispy Pork Belly Platter

Think of this as a “DIY Luxury Banh Mi” platter. The crispy pork belly pieces were quite large, so I had to tear the meat in half to fit it into the bread. To eat it, you spread the three sauces (spicy-sweet soy, Mayo, Pate) onto the bread to make it moist, then add the meat and salad. It was a very satisfying, high-end version of a classic Banh Mi.

The Best Part of the Meal: Caramel Coffee Flan and Coconut Ice Cream

Caramel Coffee Flan dessert with coconut ice cream, raspberries, and spun sugar garnish

The highlight of the Feed Me menu: Coffee Flan with coconut ice cream, raspberries, and meringue powder. The spun sugar on top makes the presentation absolutely stunning.

Caramel Coffee Flan was the star of the whole course.

    • Flan: A French-style egg custard with a silky and smooth texture. The mix of subtle coffee syrup and tangy raspberries was perfect.
    • Meringue Powder: This added a light, crunchy texture that contrasted beautifully with the soft flan.
    • The coconut ice cream was unique—unlike typical ice cream, it had a soft, slightly chewy, mochi-like texture. The coconut flavour was very subtle and perfectly balanced, and it wasn’t cold. It provided a lovely contrast to the smooth flan. Overall, it wasn’t overly sweet and tasted absolutely amazing.

Final thought: Is The Q Dining Worth It? (Plus additional Info)

If you’re looking for a stylish Asian dining spot in Canberra, this place is definitely worth a visit. The service was exceptional—the staff made me feel truly welcomed and well-attended to throughout the meal. Even though it’s 100% MSG-free, the seasoning felt a bit distinct. I didn’t quite notice it while eating because the flavours were so good, but I found myself reaching for a bit of water afterwards.

However, the flavours were great, and at $86, it’s a high-quality dining experience that offers excellent value for money. The restaurant gets packed quickly, so I highly recommend booking in advance.

    • Parking: You can find parking info on The Q Dining website. The easiest way is to park at the Westfield car park right next door and walk over. They also stay updated on Instagram and Facebook, so check those out before you go!

Netflix The Great Flood Review: Disaster Movie with a Huge SF Twist Release

Netflix The Great Flood Plot & Ending: Is it a Disaster Movie or SF?

The official poster for the Netflix film The Great Flood
The official poster for the Netflix film The Great Flood

I love disaster movies, and “The Great Flood” was one of the movies I was waiting for this year. I watched it on Netflix as soon as it was uploaded on Friday night. At first, I thought it was a normal disaster movie, but it has a very big twist. Here is my summary and review of the story.

The Great Flood – Cast, Genre, and Release Date

    • Date: December 2025 (Netflix)
    • Genre: SF · Adventure · Action
    • Running Time: Approx. 120 minutes
    • Rating: 15+

    Main Cast

    • Kim Da-mi as Goo Ahn Na
    • Park Hae-soo as Park Hee Jo
    • Kwon Eun-seong as Ja-in

The Beginning: A Sudden Flood and Escape

The movie starts like a typical disaster film. Suddenly, a huge rain hits the city, and the apartment where Goo Ahn-na lives starts to sink. The water rises very fast. Before she can pack anything, she has to run away with her son, Ja-in.

Then, Ahn-na’s company calls her. They say they are sending a helicopter and a security guard, Hee-jo, to save her and her son. The main goal in the beginning is simple: Can they reach the roof and get on the helicopter safely?

The Great Flood Netflix Movie Scene 1

The Hard Way to the Roof: Testing a Mother’s Love

The way to the roof is very difficult. While climbing up the sinking building, Ahn-na loses her son’s medicine (he has low blood sugar). She has to break into another house to find help and faces many hard choices. They meet a tsunami and almost drown, but finally, they reach the rooftop.

The Big Twist: AI and the ‘Emotion Engine’ (Spoilers below)

The Great Flood Netflix Movie Scene 2

    ▼ Spoilers Below ▼

In the middle of the movie, the story completely changes. This flood was not just a natural disaster. An asteroid hit Earth, and humans are trying to survive by creating AI. The technology is ready, but there is one problem: AI does not understand human “emotions” like love.

Actually, Ahn-na is a scientist who studies how to turn memories into data. Her son, Ja-in, is a prototype AI created for this experiment. Every moment of love and bonding Ahn-na experienced with Ja-in was actually a controlled data collection process designed to harvest the “human heart”.

Over 20,000 Trials: The Meaning of the T-shirt Number

The company needs Ahn-na for their research, but they don’t care about Ja-in anymore once they get the emotional data from him. In the end, they just take the data and leave Ja-in behind like he’s trash. As Ahn-na is forced onto a helicopter to go to the lab, she has to leave Ja-in all alone.

She feels so guilty for not being able to protect him. To make things right, she decides to connect her brain to the system, so she can share her love and motherly feelings with the new AI that will be born.

From the middle of the movie, we find out that all of Ahn-na’s pain was actually a deep learning simulation for AI. If you look at the number on her T-shirt, you can see she repeated the exact same day 21,499 times.

After facing so many obstacles, she finally finds Ja-in and proves her motherly love. This is how the data is successfully collected. For Ahn-na, it was a truly sad and cruel process.

    ✅ May 2026 Update:

This post was originally written during the film’s release in December 2025 and has been updated for its migration to WordPress in May 2026. While many were misled by the title into thinking it was a standard disaster movie, “The Great Flood” is actually a thought-provoking sci-fi film.

Considering the AI technology that has become part of our daily lives in 2026, the concept of “extracting emotional data” no longer feels like pure fiction—making it even more chilling. In an era where technology frequently attempts to replicate human emotions, the film’s message about the value of “motherhood”—something that cannot be translated into pure data—carries even more weight today than it did last year.

My Review: Is the Great Flood a Disaster Movie or Human SF?

Don’t let the title fool you.

If you want a normal disaster movie like Haeundae, you might be disappointed. This movie is more of an SF drama about motherhood and technology. It reminded me of the movie Interstellar, where a father’s love for his daughter saves the world.

Instead of just showing the flood, this movie asks: ‘Can AI really learn and feel emotions taught by humans?’ It is a good movie for those who like mysteries and SF. But if you are only looking for a disaster film, you might not like the twist.

🔍 More Thrillers You Can’t Miss:

    [13·67]
A legendary Hong Kong noir that connects six crimes with 50 years of history. A true masterpiece for mystery purists.

    [The Art of Sarah]
A haunting Netflix thriller that blurs the line between art and obsession. Perfect if you love dark, psychological twists.

  • IVF Preparation: One-Day Hysteroscopy & Laparoscopy Surgery at a Private Hospital in Australia

IVF Preparation: One-Day Hysteroscopy & Laparoscopy Surgery at a Private Hospital in Australia

👉 Important Update for 2026: These costs are based on my experience in November 2025. According to the Australian Department of Health, private health insurance premiums rose by an average of 4.41% as of April 1, 2026, reflecting a 5% increase in medical and hospital service costs. Due to rising hospital wage bills and accommodation fees, out-of-pocket expenses (Gap Fees) may be slightly higher than in 2025. Additionally, Medicare rebates are subject to annual adjustments every July. Please confirm a formal ‘Informed Financial Consent’ from your specialist for accurate 2026 pricing.

Why I Chose One-Day Surgery During IVF Preparation

Doctors performing surgery in an operating room

Photo by Yaser Mobarakabadi on Unsplash

While preparing for IVF, I became worried about my uterine health. I decided to have a one-day hysteroscopy and laparoscopy surgery at a private hospital in Australia.

This post shares my personal experience, based on Medibank Gold insurance, including:

    • Actual out-of-pocket surgery costs
    • My experience with public vs private hospitals in Australia

A few years ago, I had surgery for endometriosis at a public hospital. I expected a long wait, as public hospitals often have waiting lists. In my case, it took just over two months to get a surgery confirmation letter. At that time, I only paid for pain medication after discharge.

👉 Please keep in mind that waiting times for public hospitals can vary greatly depending on your location, the time of year, and the urgency of the case. In my situation, I was diagnosed with Stage 4 Endometriosis, which was considered a severe case.

IVF Preparation and Uterine Health Concerns

During IVF preparation, I was already in contact with a specialist. My uterine condition was never perfect, but I usually ignored slightly long periods or mild pain. This time, my period was unusually long, the pain was severe, and I had abnormal bleeding. It was clear that my uterus might need attention.

    • I requested a vaginal endoscopy (hysteroscopy); the first results showed no issues.
    • Still worried, I had another hysteroscopy during my period, which revealed an abnormality.
    • From the second hysteroscopy to surgery, it took about one month.
    • For me, an assistant surgeon was needed for procedure 35637, causing a slight delay. This requirement can vary depending on the case.

One-Day Hysteroscopy and Laparoscopy Surgery Process in Australia

    • Arrived three hours before surgery (extra time for medication before hysteroscopy)
    • Waited in the ward, then walked to the operating room
    • After surgery, moved to the recovery room
    • Sandwich provided
    • Blood pressure checked every 20 – 30 minutes (2–3 times)
    • No pain and stable vitals → discharged the same day

Surgery Codes and Procedures for IVF Patients

    • Operative laparoscopy (35637)
    • Hysteroscopy for suspected intrauterine pathology (35630)

Private Hospital Surgery Costs for IVF in Australia

👉 These costs are based on my experience in November 2025. Please note that actual expenses can vary significantly depending on individual circumstances, your specialist’s fees, and your level of insurance cover.

    Out-of-Pocket Costs

    Total: $3,814 (rounded)
Includes only surgery-related costs (pre-surgery specialist fees excluded).

    • Assistant surgeon: $350 (required for some complex cases)
    • Anaesthetist: $870 (your gap after rebates / total fee was $1,195)
    • Two procedures (surgeon fee): $1,844 (your gap after rebates / total fee was $2,425)
    • Hospital excess fee: $750 – remaining costs covered by Medibank

    Medicare & Medibank Rebates

    • Two procedures (surgeon fee): Medicare $436, Medibank $145
    • Anaesthetist: Medicare $325
    • Hospital: Medibank covered $1,321 – paid directly to the hospital

How Payments Work for Private Hospital Surgery

In Australia, you’ll get a document called ‘Informed Financial Consent’ before your surgery. It’s basically a quote for all the costs. I really recommend checking this carefully and calling your health fund with it to confirm exactly how much you’ll need to pay out-of-pocket. It helps avoid any surprise bills later.

    • Hospital fee: Paid before surgery via e-admission online; confirmation email included payment details.
    • Assistant surgeon/anaesthetist/specialist fees: Invoices sent after surgery, paid via EFT or payment link using the preferred method.

Public vs Private Hospital Surgery in Australia

Before using a private hospital, I expected luxurious facilities, but public and private hospitals are similar in quality.

    Both types of hospitals:

    • Have friendly and professional staff
    • Provide clear instructions for surgery and admission

The main difference is in surgery scheduling:

    • Private hospital: Choose the date with your doctor
    • Public hospital: Wait on a list until a surgery letter arrives
Hospital ward corridor with patient beds

Recovery After Hysteroscopy and Laparoscopy Surgery in Australia

    In the recovery room:

    • Slight bleeding, almost no pain
    • Sandwich provided, blood pressure checked
    • Discharge occurred when my blood pressure was stable, and everything looked normal

    During recovery:

    • I was able to walk on the same day.
    • For about a week, I avoided bending or putting strain on the wound and sat in a squat position rather than bending forward.
    • I was advised to take pain medication (Panadol or Nurofen) if needed, and the hospital also provided strong painkillers in case of severe pain. I didn’t need to take any as I had no pain.

👉 Note: Some people experience gas pain from carbon dioxide used during laparoscopy, but in my case — both during my previous public hospital surgery and this private hospital surgery — I did not experience any gas-related pain. I was able to walk on the same day and was advised to take pain medication if needed, though I didn’t require any.

    Summary

    • Type of Surgery: Hysteroscopy & Laparoscopy (One-Day)
    • Location: Private Hospital, Canberra
    • Insurance: Medibank Gold + Medicare
    • Total Out-of-Pocket: $3,814
    • Recovery: Minimal pain, discharged same day, walking allowed, avoid bending for 1 week
    • Extra Info: Public vs private hospital experience, waiting times, and cost comparison.

*Disclaimer: This post is based on my personal experience and is intended for informational purposes only; it does not constitute medical or professional advice. Costs and procedures may vary based on your health condition, insurance plan, hospital policy, and the specific scope of surgery.

Please consult with your medical specialist and private health fund for personalised information and a formal quote.

    Why We Visited Sutton

My husband mentioned that there was a good bakery in Sutton, just outside Canberra, called Little Sutton Bakehouse, and suggested we try it as a short weekend drive.

I expected Sutton to be a bit further away, but it turned out to be much closer than I thought. It’s an easy drive from Canberra and works perfectly as a relaxed half-day trip.

The food at Little Sutton Bakehouse was genuinely good, and with the Sutton Village Country Markets happening nearby on the same day, the visit ended up being more enjoyable than expected.

Little Sutton Bakehouse – Cafe & Bakery Review

    Chunky Beef Pie

This was my husband’s pick (he loves pies), and I only had a big bite. The seasoning was well balanced — not overly salty or heavy, very much a homemade-style chunky beef pie.

One thing I really liked was how easy it was to eat. Even when you bite into it, the filling stays inside, so it’s clean and not messy. The portion size felt just right, and after finishing it, there was no greasy or overly thirsty feeling, which made it even more satisfying.

Chunky Beef Pie cross-section – juicy, tender beef neatly bite-sized for easy eating.

    Focaccia – Mortadella

Ingredients: Mortadella ham, stracciatella, pistachio pesto, fresh wild rocket, hot honey glaze

    • The mortadella was soft and mild, without being salty
    • The cheese was creamy and nutty, pairing well with the ham
    • The pistachio pesto added flavour and moisture without feeling heavy or oily
    • The sauce amount was spot on — no dripping when biting into it
    • The focaccia bread was crispy on the outside
    • Fresh rocket added a slight bitterness that cut through the richness
    • Lightly marinated red capsicum with hot honey glaze gave a nice crunch and gentle sweetness

Overall, it was not heavy at all and made a clean, well-balanced lunch.

    Vanilla Slice

The vanilla slice was something my husband wanted to try. I personally don’t enjoy desserts that are very creamy or soft, so I only had a small bite — the flavour itself was good.

    That said:

    • It squishes out easily when eaten with a fork or when you take a bite.
    • It’s a bit too creamy to eat comfortably by hand.

    Berry Danish

The strawberry danish at Little Sutton Bakehouse came topped with fresh strawberries, blueberries and smooth custard cream. The pastry itself was very buttery and flavourful, and when I removed some of the cream, it suited my taste much better.

👉 This is very much personal preference — if you enjoy custard or cream-based pastries, you would likely love both desserts.

    Coffee at Little Sutton Bakehouse

It wasn’t the oat milk brand we usually drink, but both of us were still happy with the coffee. Because Little Sutton Bakehouse was extremely busy that day, one of our orders was delivered incorrectly and had to be brought back, so the coffee arrived slightly cooled and had spilled a little in the holder. A small downside, but understandable given how busy the cafe was.

    Atmosphere at Little Sutton Bakehouse

    • Around 15 indoor seats
    • Four large shared outdoor tables

The cafe itself isn’t small, but it becomes very busy during peak hours. On this particular visit, the Sutton Village Country Markets were happening right in front of the bakery, which added to the crowd. People were lining up, picking up food, and leaving quickly. On market days, it’s not the best place for a quiet, relaxed sit-down. We also felt the need to leave shortly after finishing our food.

    Sutton Village Country Markets Review

On the same day we visited Little Sutton Bakehouse, the Sutton Village Country Markets were held right across the bakehouse. It’s not a huge market, but with around 30 stalls, there was plenty to explore.

    • Dog products, Candles, Wooden boards
    • Home decor, Vintage metal pieces
    • Bags and baby clothing, Soaps
    • Tea and drink blends

    Tips for Visiting Sutton

    • Sutton is a very small town, with limited things to do outside the cafe → visiting on market days makes the trip much more worthwhile
    • Expect crowds at Little Sutton Bakehouse during peak hours
    • Visiting between September and October pairs well with the nearby tulip gardens

Canberra’s “Floriade” is well known, but if you’re after a quieter, less touristy alternative near Canberra, Sutton is a great option. We’re planning to visit again during the tulip season this year.

👉 Overall, Sutton makes a great short drive from Canberra for a relaxed weekend day trip.

✔️ Who This Trip Is Perfect For

The hidden truth behind the murders in The Price of Confession

    ▼ Spoilers Below ▼

    👉 The Se-hoon Case

Mo-eun is imprisoned for poisoning the parents of a man named Se-hoon. She claims it was revenge for a year of abuse while working at their dental clinic. However, she shows an unusual obsession with Se-hoon himself, regretting that she did not kill him as well. If Yoon-soo’s story begins with her husband’s death, Mo-eun’s tragedy begins with her twisted connection to Se-hoon.

    👉 The Deal Falls Apart

Yoon-soo ultimately cannot bring herself to commit murder. Yet Se-hoon is later found dead. Even though Yoon-soo did not kill him, the outcome of Mo-eun’s deal still becomes reality.

    👉 The Real Killer

The truth is revealed: The murderer of both Yoon-soo’s husband and Se-hoon is the same person. The real culprits are lawyer Jin Young-in and his wife, Soo-yeon. Soo-yeon killed Lee Gi-dae due to a conflict over art plagiarism. Jin Young-in manipulates the case by acting as Mo-eun’s lawyer and keeping close ties to Yoon-soo’s defence lawyer as well.

    Final Conclusion

    • Mo-eun completes her revenge without directly killing anyone
    • Yoon-soo clears all charges for murder and proves her innocence on her own
    • Mo-eun’s real identity, Kang So-hae, and her tragic past are revealed

In the end, the drama follows a clear rule of cause and effect: everyone who committed serious wrongdoing faces consequences – Se-hoon, Mo-eun, Se-hoon’s parents, and Jin Young-in all meet tragic ends. Soo-yeon, the wife of lawyer Jin Young-in, survives, but the evidence strongly suggests she will eventually face justice.

  • Silicone Lid Cleaning Tips: Remove Tough Red Stains Easily

Silicone Lid Cleaning Tips: Remove Tough Red Stains Easily

✅ 2026 Update: I’m still happily using the silicone lids I bought at that great price. Since the mapo tofu incident, I now try to divide red foods into separate containers or avoid overfilling them to prevent direct contact with the lids. Currently, this specific product is listed as out of stock at Costco Australia, but I hope this cleaning method remains helpful for anyone using similar silicone lid products!

How I Removed Red Stains from Silicone Lids Using Baking Soda (Simple Method That Actually Works)

Three types of silicone lids from Costco

Silicone kitchen tools are great, but they get stained very easily, especially by chilli oil, kimchi broth, curry, or anything with a strong red colour.

I had the same problem with my PrepWorks Silicone Lids from Costco, and I almost threw them away. Luckily, a simple baking soda cleaning method helped remove most of the staining, so I wanted to share what worked for me.

Product: PrepWorks Silicone 10 Lids (Costco)

    3 small (15 cm)/ 4 medium (20 cm)/ 3 large (26.4 cm) – I bought them during a $15 sale, which was a great deal.

👉 If you’re wondering whether a Costco membership is worth it, read our detailed post on Costco membership benefits and considerations.

The stain happened after storing leftover mapo tofu. Some chilli oil splashed onto the lid, turning it bright red.

Red-stained silicone lid from leftover mapo tofu

Why Silicone Gets Stained So Easily

Silicone looks smooth, but the surface has tiny pores. When oil + red pigments (chilli oil, paprika extract, capsaicin) touch it, the colour sinks inside the material. Dish soap cleans only the outside, but the colour stays trapped. That’s why hot water + baking soda works much better for silicone discolouration.

    What You Need

    • Baking soda
    • Hot water
    • Vinegar (optional)
    • Sponge or paper towel
    • Bowl for soaking

How to Remove Red Chilli Oil Stains from Silicone Lids

    1. Soak in Hot Water (5–10 Minutes)

Hot water softens the oil inside the silicone pores.

    2. Add Baking Soda and Scrub

    • Sprinkle baking soda on the wet lid and scrub gently.
    • You should notice the red colour becoming lighter.

    3. For Strong Stains: Baking Soda + Vinegar Foam

If some stains won’t come off, put a thick layer of baking soda paste on the area. Add a few drops of vinegar—this creates quick fizzing that helps lift residue from the pores. I left mine with the paste on for about 3 hours, and it helped reduce the stain a lot.

(Note: The vinegar doesn’t make the baking soda “stronger.” The bubbling just helps loosen the stain physically.)

Silicone lid soaked in baking soda paste

Silicone lid coated with thick baking soda in warm water (laundry sink)
I applied a generous layer of baking soda and let it sit for about 3 hours.

    4. Rinse and Sun-Dry

Sunlight can fade leftover pigment and also helps with drying.

Lid removed from baking soda water

Lid removed from the baking soda water, before sun-drying

    Stained silicon lid hanging outside

When I first hung the lid on the clothesline, the weather was cloudy, so I was unsure.

    Lid drying in the sun

Luckily, the weather cleared up, and I left the lid in the summer sun for a few hours

    Red chilli stain removal result

Silicone lids dried in the sun show even colour, with most of the red chilli oil stains removed.

    How to Prevent Silicone Stains

    • Rinse with cold water before storing oily food
    • Wash right after use
    • Do an occasional deep clean with baking soda
    • Avoid metal scrubbers (they scratch the surface)
    • Avoid bleach or very strong cleaning products

When Baking Soda Won’t Work (Permanent Stains)

Even though this method worked on my lids, not all silicone stains are removable. I once had an Apple silicone watch band that turned a strange green colour. I tried:

    • Baking soda
    • Oxygen bleach
    • Vinegar
    • Magic eraser
    • Regular eraser

Nothing helped, and I had to buy a new one.

    Apple band after cleaning attempts

Apple band after multiple cleaning attempts
Newly taken for this post: this band has been treated with baking soda, oxygen bleach, vinegar, magic eraser, and regular eraser—but the stain remains.

Types of Silicone Stains That Are Permanent

    1. Heat Damage (Heat Discolouration)

    These stains can’t be fixed:

    • Microwave exposure
    • Too close to an air fryer or oven
    • Touching a hot pan

Heat can permanently change silicone colour.

    2. Pigments Deep Inside Micro-Cracks

Over time, silicone develops tiny cracks or pores. Pigments from foods like chilli powder, curry (turmeric), and paprika can go deep inside. Baking soda or oxygen bleach can only clean the surface, not the inside. 👉 These stains are basically permanent.

Conclusion: The Most Effective Way to Remove Stains from Silicone Lids

Baking soda worked surprisingly well on my silicone lids. If you’re dealing with red chilli oil stains on silicone, I definitely recommend trying this simple method first. It’s inexpensive, easy, and uses items you already have.

👉Just remember: some stains are removable, and some aren’t—especially when heat damage is involved.

Cooma Food & Cafe Guide – Canberra Day Trip + Vietnamese Restaurant Review

✅ 2026 May Update: As of now, Bò Né seems to be unavailable on their online menu. As mentioned in the post, this dish is quite rare even in authentic Vietnamese restaurants in Australia. I will be posting a new review soon about another restaurant we happened to stop by a while ago, where my husband mentioned the Bò Né was actually quite decent. Stay tuned!

Where to Eat in Cooma – Vietnamese Food

Entrance of Cisne Vietnamese restaurant in Cooma with small black ONA sign

Entrance of Cisne Vietnamese Cafe in Cooma

My husband has been talking about Bò Né ever since he tried it in Vietnam – that sizzling steak-and-egg breakfast (Bo Ne) served on a hot plate with a baguette. However, after returning to Australia, we struggled to find a place that actually serves this dish. Many Vietnamese restaurants exist, but very few offer Bò Né.

Then we heard the Coffee shop Cisne in Cooma had it on the menu, so we decided to take a weekend drive to check it out!

Quiet, Hidden Vietnamese Restaurant in Cooma

We almost drove past it because the sign was quite small. The tiny ONA Coffee logo on the wall was the only thing that caught our eye. The place is simple and small, maybe six tables inside and outside combined. Many locals and workers seemed to stop by for takeaway, giving the place a warm “local favourite” feeling.

Inside Cisne – High ceilings and cozy atmosphere; seating is limited, as most customers opt for takeaway.

Kitchen side at Cisne – The wall is decorated with colourful graffiti, adding a vibrant touch.

What We Ordered & How It Tasted

    Bun Cha

Grilled pork patty & BBQ pork with rice noodles

    • Served with shredded cabbage, Coriander, fried spring roll pieces and a light fish sauce
    • First bite: hurb + subtle smoky pork flavour
    • Noodles were soft, veggies crisp, and the portion was very generous
    • Overall flavour was clean and light rather than bold or punchy
    • Not the most unforgettable bun cha, but easy to eat until the end without feeling heavy
    • Great value for the size

One-line summary: Fresh, clean flavours. A good option for a light meal.

Husband’s Dish – Vietnamese Morning Dish (Bò Né style)

Hot plate beef + pâté + meatball-style ham + sunny side up egg + baguette

We came mainly for this dish, so expectations were high. However:

    • The hot plate arrived sizzling, but the sauce was almost reduced, so there wasn’t much to dip the bread into
    • The beef and pâté tasted okay but felt a bit dry without the sauce
    • The egg was overcooked, not runny – so we missed that creamy yolk + sauce combo that makes Bò Né special
    • The overall flavour wasn’t bad, but it didn’t give the rich, buttery, “soak-your-bread-in-the-sauce” experience we hoped for

One-line summary: Not the rich, saucy Bò Né we were expecting – a bit dry and less indulgent.

Both of us also felt quite thirsty afterwards, so the seasoning might have been on the stronger side.

Sizzling plate beef Bo Ne at Cisne with fully cooked egg and minimal sauce

Second Stop – A Small, Cozy Cafe With Great Vibes

After lunch, we walked around the main street and found The Courtyard Coffee Shop, a small, vintage-style cafe. Only a couple of tables at the entrance, a few inside, and some more seats in the backyard. No full brunch menu – mostly coffee, snacks, and small sweets.

We ordered a half-strength oat flat white as usual:

    • Soft grain aroma
    • Light body, smooth finish
    • Simple but very well-made coffee

It felt like the kind of place where coffee is the main focus — and they do it right. With a few tables in the backyard, we enjoyed a quiet, relaxing space to have our own conversation. If you’re visiting alone, it’s perfect to grab a cup of coffee and read a book.

Tips for a Cooma Day Trip from Canberra

Cooma is an easy drive from Canberra and great for a relaxed weekend trip. The town is bigger than you might think, with lots of cafes and food spots. If you enjoy coffee exploring, Cooma is actually a fun place — cafes like The Lott and 123 Coffee House have been great on past visits.

    Overall Summary

    • If you go specifically for authentic Bò Né, you might find it a bit underwhelming

    • Locals were buying takeaway, so items like banh mi might be surprisingly good

Bredbo Christmas Barn Visit — Canberra Day Trip + Bredbo Pie Shop Review

    * 2026 Update (Originally Published: Dec 2025): Following my blog migration to this new WordPress site, I’ve updated this post with the latest 2026 seasonal opening schedule for the Bredbo Christmas Barn and current information for the Bredbo Pie Shop.

A Quick Stop on the Way to Cooma

Entrance of Bredbo Christmas Barn in New South Wales, seasonal Christmas shop near Canberra

    Bredbo Christmas Barn entrance

On our way to Cooma, my husband mentioned that there’s a Christmas shop that only opens for half of the year. I’m not someone who’s really into Christmas decorations (and probably won’t be in the future), but I got out of the car thinking it would be a good chance to stretch a bit and look around.

You park outside the fence, walk past a sleepy Santa, and the entrance is not the building at the front but the one at the back. On the front door, there’s a funny sign saying: “Your husband rang, he said, buy everything you want.”

Sleeping santa statue near the gate at Bredbo Christmas Barn

A Surprising “Wow” Moment at the Entrance

The moment I opened the door, I was honestly shocked. Even though I’ve always thought I had zero childlike excitement left for Christmas, the scale of this place made me say “wow” out loud. It’s full of sparkling decorations, and the size of the shop feels like a mini Christmas exhibition.

There were quite a few people, but it didn’t feel crowded or uncomfortable. The layout makes it easy to browse comfortably.

    Beautiful Theme-Based Christmas Displays

Inside the shop, everything is organised by theme and colour, so it’s really fun to walk around.

    • Various Christmas ornaments
    • Christmas trees and wreaths
    • Santa’s in different colours and themes
    • Deer, polar bears, and other winter animals
    • Vintage-style decorations
    • Frozen-style white theme
    • Shiny gold theme section
    • Gingerbread & candy shop themed decorations

Even for someone who normally doesn’t care about Christmas decorations, this place brings back a sudden childlike excitement. If you have kids, they’ll absolutely love it. More than just a shop, the aesthetic layout of each theme makes every photo look like a piece from a perfectly arranged gallery.

    Seasonal Opening Only (Important Information)

Bredbo Christmas Barn is not open all year. It typically operates for approximately six months, primarily from June to December.

    • Opening for the 2025 season: Saturday 31st May – Monday 22nd December
    • Open: Thursday–Monday, 10 AM–4 PM
    • Closed: Tuesdays & Wednesdays

Since their Facebook page is updated regularly, it’s best to check the official Facebook page for the most accurate and up-to-date information.

    Delivery & Pickup Information

It seems like the shop is mainly offline and doesn’t run a detailed online store or shipping service. So if you are planning to buy a big item or purchase many items, it’s a good idea to contact them by phone or email in advance to check any information related to the delivery service.

    Useful Tip for Canberra Visitors

Visiting Bredbo Christmas Barn isn’t just simple shopping — it’s more like a day out + short break + Christmas mood experience.

Every year, the Christmas lights list is published on ChristmasLightSearch (run by Red Reindeer Media). It shows all the houses in Canberra with outdoor Christmas light displays. People who really love Christmas decorating often check this site to get ideas for their own decorations. Doing a nighttime light tour is also a fun holiday tradition.

If you’re looking for another festive spot closer to the city, check out my visit to Gold Creek Village. It has a charming Christmas shop and a great cafe serving unique Ube jam!

👉 A Day Out at Gold Creek Village: Cafe & Christmas Shop

Nearby Stop — The Bredbo Pie Shop

Just 1–2 minutes by car from the Christmas Barn is the Bredbo Pie Shop, which seems quite popular in the area. There are outdoor tables too, so it’s a nice place to rest. We arrived a bit late, so only a few options were left.

    • My husband got the Chunky Beef Pie
    • I tried the mushroom & Baby Spanich Quiche

I don’t usually enjoy pies because of the heavy feeling afterwards, but the quiche was surprisingly nice. The outside had a croissant-like crisp texture, and the inside was soft with cheese, sliced mushrooms and spinach mixed really well, giving it a savoury and satisfying flavour. If you are already visiting the Christmas Barn, it’s worth stopping by the pie shop too.

Bredbo Christmas Barn Review: Final Thoughts

Even if you are not really into Christmas decorations, Bredbo Christmas Barn still gives a kind of childlike excitement. Everyone inside seemed happy — kids, adults, couples, families. It’s a nice place for a short day trip, especially if you are coming from Canberra.

    2026 Update:

    • Opening Information: As of May 2026, the Bredbo Christmas Barn has not yet opened for the season.
    • 2026 Schedule: While it is expected to open in June, the exact opening date has not been confirmed on their official website or Facebook page yet.
    • Recommendation: Please be sure to check their official social media or website for the exact opening date before planning your visit.

Reflecting on the Bredbo Pie Shop

While migrating my blog, I found myself thinking back to the Mushroom & Baby Spinach Quiche I had during that trip. To be honest, it was my first time ever trying a quiche, so I don’t have a point of comparison, but it was a taste I’d definitely want to try again if I’m passing through the area.

Do you have any recommendations for delicious quiche spots near Canberra? Please let me know in the comments! 🙂

Harry Potter badge from Bredbo Christmas Barn

I wasn’t planning to buy any Christmas decorations since I don’t really decorate, but as a Harry Potter fan, I couldn’t walk past the Harry Potter item, so I ended up buying a badge.

Authentic Mongolian ger entrance at Naadam Restaurant Canberra

An authentic Mongolian feel at the restaurant entrance.

I was looking for something different from my usual meals, so I decided to try Mongolian food for the first time. Naadam had an amazing rating, so I went with quite high expectations. After visiting, I can understand why so many people love this place. ⭐ Rating: 4.8 / 501 reviews (as of May 2026).

    Reservation & Free Parking Info

I made the booking through the official website [Here].

Close to the visit date, they sent me an email with a detailed map showing free parking areas. Also, you can check the details about parking on their website. It had clear red arrows, which were very kind and helpful for first-time visitors.

Canberra Yurt Dining Experience & Mongolian Restaurant Atmosphere

It was a bit chilly that day, so originally I was planning to sit inside. But the staff told me the yurt (Mongolian ger) was not cold at all, so we decided to sit there.

The yurt was warm and cozy, and the interior was decorated with Mongolian photos and traditional items. I felt like I was travelling somewhere rather than just eating dinner in Canberra.

Seating includes several two-person tables and one large table for about 10 people.

    Naadam Mocktails & Drink Options

They have some mocktails, which is nice for people who don’t drink alcohol. The drinks themselves were okay — not too special, not bad — but good enough to enjoy with the food.

Naadam Restaurant Set Menu ($55/$85) for Beginners

They do have individual dishes, but since we are not familiar with Mongolian cuisine, we decided to choose the set menu. Naadam offers two sets:

    • $55 set: The most popular option for first-time visitors.
    • $85 set: A more extensive selection.

We are not big eaters, and we planned to go for dessert after dinner, so we ordered the $55 set. Interestingly, the other two groups inside the yurt also ordered the same $55 menu. It seems like this is the most popular option for first-time visitors.

    Customer Service & Dining Experience

    • Staff explained each dish when serving.

    1. Ox Tongue

    • The texture was very soft and easy to slice.
    • The mild sauce added flavour without being too strong.
    • Well-balanced and pleasant to eat.

    2. Round Beef Pocket

    • Crispy but also a bit fluffy on the outside, with beef inside.
    • The chewy beef and crunchy carrot matched well.
    • Even without extra sauce, the subtle umami flavour was nice.

The combination of ingredients is best enjoyed wrapped, and it quickly became my husband’s favourite dish.

    3. Covered Soup

    • Spinach dough on top, break to reveal warm soup inside.
    • Dough has a slightly jelly-like, sticky texture, a bit tricky to separate from the bowl.
    • Dipping dough into soup makes it chewy and enjoyable.
    • Unique flavour compared to other Asian soups, a novel experience.

    4. Mongolian Barbecue

    • Sauce was poured on top when served, creating a sizzling sound.
    • Aroma and sound immediately boost appetite.
    • Rich and flavorful, though slightly oily and a bit salty for me.

    • Would I return? Yes

They also update Instagram and Facebook quite frequently, so you can check recent photos and announcements there.
We originally planned to go for dessert afterward, but after the set menu and savoury doughnuts, we became too full.
Overall, it was a very enjoyable dinner and I fully understand why the reviews are so high.

As of May 2026, I’ve confirmed that the set menus remain the same as when we visited in December. Even if you don’t choose a set menu, all the dishes included are available to order as individual a la carte items. I hope this information remains helpful for anyone planning a visit.
