Street parking spaces and carpark information outside Fyshwick Vietnamese Bakery

As you can see in the photo, there are plenty of car parks along the road, but during the week, most shops only allow their own customers to park right in front of them.

This banh mi shop is located right in the middle of the busy Fyshwick retail shops, making the weekday lunch rush around 12 pm incredibly packed with local workers lining up for takeaway. If you want to enjoy your meal in a more relaxed environment, it is recommended to avoid this peak hour.

While there is plenty of street parking available along the road, many spots directly in front of the shops are reserved for their own customers during the week. To avoid the weekday parking struggle, skipping the peak lunch hour will give you a much better chance of parking right outside.

  • Opening hours tip: I actually recommend visiting on a Saturday (07:00–14:30) when most of the surrounding Fyshwick industrial businesses are closed, and please note that they are closed on Sundays.
  • Seating and atmosphere: There are about 3 to 4 tables available both indoors and outdoors. The table turnover is quite fast, so dining in is definitely an option. The interior has a simple, no-frills look, but it carries that lively, high-energy vibe unique to the Fyshwick area.

Menu Options, Prices and Customising Your Banh Mi Order

Instead of looking up at a traditional printed menu on the wall, you order by looking at the photo menu stands placed right on top of the counter. The laminated photo displays are very clear and easy to follow, making it simple to order even if it is your first time visiting the shop.

  • Prices: A banh mi costs around $12 to $13, which aligns with the average price of a banh mi in Canberra.
  • Menu features: The ingredients are listed directly under each photo, which helps you choose your meal easily. Of course, you can customise your order to remove anything you do not want. In my case, I asked for extra chilli and completely excluded coriander from mine.

Cold Meat Banh Mi Review: An Honest Look at the Flavour and Texture

Although it was labeled as a ‘Cold Meat’ banh mi, it was different from the traditional cold cut rolls that typically feature three different types of meats and hams. This shop uses just one single variety of pork.

Texture: The meat texture was somewhat dry and tough, which made the very first bite feel quite dry.

Sauce and balance: The sauce is not overpowering, which is a positive point as it allows the natural flavours of the ingredients to come through. However, the pork was placed in the middle while the sauce and the refreshing, juicy pickles were pushed towards the ends. Unless you manage to get every single ingredient in one mouthful, you cannot really avoid the dryness of the meat.

Cold Meat Banh Mi Served Fyshwick Vietnamese Bakery

This is my cold meat banh mi ordered with extra chilli and no coriander. It had a lot of onions inside, but my mouth did not feel uncomfortable at all even after eating that many onions. It was not too bad, but for me, the meat was a bit dry and tough, which was disappointing.

Pork Sausage Banh Mi and Overall Bread Texture Analysis

My husband chose the Pork Sausage Banh Mi, and I tried a bite of his as well. The amount of sauce and the overall combination worked well together, and the main pork sausage itself was good.

Bread quality: The bread is kept at room temperature and was neither tough nor soggy. However, because it was not served warm, it lacked that freshly toasted, crispy texture, which was a bit disappointing.

Final Verdict, Revisit Intentions and What to Order Next Time

A clean aftertaste: The seasoning is not overly heavy or salty, so I did not feel thirsty after finishing the meal. In particular, the raw onions did not have that sharp, burning bite at all, leaving my mouth feeling very fresh without any uncomfortable aftertaste.

Overall, it was a decent experience, but it did not leave a strong enough impression to make me feel like I absolutely must return.

  • Next visit plan: Most of the time when we visit a banh mi shop, my husband orders the ‘Crispy Pork’. I will need to try their Crispy Pork next time to make an accurate comparison with other popular spots.

Canberra Banh Mi Review Summary

This shop stands out for its clean, non-greasy flavours and a surprisingly fresh aftertaste despite the raw onions. However, the bread was not crunchy and the cold meat was a bit dry, which was a bit disappointing. The portion size is perfect for an adult—neither too small nor too massive. The Vietnamese iced coffee I shared with my husband was not overly sweet and tasted pretty good.
