Personal Viewing Background｜Not a Hardcore Avatar Fan, But Always End Up Watching

I am not a huge fan of fantasy movies, except for Harry Potter. When the first Avatar came out, I was impressed by the visuals, but I was not a big fan. Still, I always end up watching the new Avatar movies.

My husband is also not a big fan, and he had mostly forgotten the story. So before watching Avatar 3: Fire and Ash, we quickly reviewed the previous films. I wanted to watch it in 3D, but my husband gets motion sickness, so we watched it in a regular theatre. That was a bit disappointing for me.

Spoiler-Free Review｜A Broader World Through Internal Conflict

Avatar: Fire and Ash continues the story right after The Way of Water.

The focus is not just the fight between humans and Na’vi, but also conflicts inside Pandora and the feelings of the Sully family.

The biggest change is the new Na’vi clan, the Ash People. Unlike the previous water-based world, this movie shows Pandora’s harsh areas with fire, ash, and volcanoes.

The Ash People value power, survival, and violence over harmony with nature. This breaks the usual idea of “Na’vi = good.”

Even though the movie is long and the story moves slowly at times, Avatar 3 is important for understanding where the world of Pandora is heading.

🔥 Spoiler Review｜What “Fire and Ash” Really Mean

The movie Avatar: Fire and Ash starts with the Sully family still sad after the death of Neteyam. This loss is the main emotional part of the movie and drives the big problems in Avatar 3.

The new Ash People are one of the most dangerous threats on Pandora. Unlike other Na’vi clans, they don’t follow or believe in Eywa, the Great Mother. The Ash People live alone, attack other Na’vi clans, and will even work with the human RDA if it helps them survive.

This is what makes Avatar 3: Fire and Ash different from the previous Avatar movies. Even though the fight with the RDA is still there, the main danger comes from inside the Na’vi world. The movie asks an important question for viewers: how far will people go to survive on Pandora?

A Missed Opportunity｜Varang’s Ambiguous Exit

One disappointing aspect is the fate of Varang, the powerful and charismatic leader of the Ash People. Despite her strong presence throughout the film, she exits the story without a clear defeat or victory. It’s unclear whether this is meant to hint at her return in the next instalment. If this truly is her final appearance, her ambiguous departure feels somewhat unsatisfying.

Ending Explained｜The Message Behind Fire and Ash

In the title Fire and Ash, fire represents destruction, while ash symbolises what remains after that destruction.

The ending avoids presenting a clear victory and instead leaves things deliberately unresolved, clearly setting the stage for the next chapter. Pandora is still far from safe, and after enduring so much emotional turmoil, the Sully family is no longer the same. The changes introduced in Avatar 3 raise an important question: how will these fractures shape the story in Avatar 4?

Final Thoughts｜Overall Review of Avatar: Fire and Ash

Visually, the movie looks amazing as always. The final fight happens on land, in the sky, and in the sea at the same time, giving the stunning visuals that the Avatar series is known for.

Some people might think the story is slow or very similar to The Way of Water. But for me, who didn’t expect much from the plot, it was fun to watch.

Even though the movie is over three hours long, it never felt boring, and the time went by quickly.

While you will be able to watch it at home later, Avatar is best on the big screen. If you don’t get motion sick, watching it in 3D would make it even more amazing.

It’s important to know the previous movies before watching. If you’ve forgotten some parts of the story, a quick review will make the movie much easier to enjoy.

Netflix The Great Flood Plot & Ending: Is it a Disaster Movie or SF?

I love disaster movies, and “The Great Flood” was one of the movies I was waiting for this year. I watched it on Netflix as soon as it was uploaded on Friday night. At first, I thought it was a normal disaster movie, but it has a very big twist. Here is my summary and review of the story.

The Beginning: A Sudden Flood and Escape

The movie starts like a typical disaster film. Suddenly, a huge rain hits the city, and the apartment where Goo Ahn-na lives starts to sink. The water rises very fast. Before she can pack anything, she has to run away with her son, Ja-in.

Then, Ahn-na’s company calls her. They say they are sending a helicopter and a security guard, Hee-jo, to save her and her son. The main goal in the beginning is simple: Can they reach the roof and get on the helicopter safely?

The Hard Way to the Roof: Testing a Mother’s Love

The way to the roof is very difficult. While climbing up the sinking building, Ahn-na loses her son’s medicine (he has low blood sugar). She has to break into another house to find help and faces many hard choices. They meet a tsunami and almost drown, but finally, they reach the rooftop.

The Big Twist: AI and the ‘Emotion Engine’ (Spoilers below)

In the middle of the movie, the story completely changes. This flood was not just a natural disaster. An asteroid hit Earth, and humans are trying to survive by creating AI. The technology is ready, but there is one problem: AI does not understand human “emotions” like love.

Actually, Ahn-na is a scientist who studies how to turn memories into data. Her son, Ja-in, is a prototype AI created for this experiment. Every moment of love and bonding Ahn-na experienced with Ja-in was actually a controlled data collection process designed to harvest the “human heart”.

Over 20,000 Trials: The Meaning of the T-shirt Number

The company needs Ahn-na for their research, but they don’t care about Ja-in anymore once they get the emotional data from him. In the end, they just take the data and leave Ja-in behind like he’s trash. As Ahn-na is forced onto a helicopter to go to the lab, she has to leave Ja-in all alone.

She feels so guilty for not being able to protect him. To make things right, she decides to connect her brain to the system, so she can share her love and motherly feelings with the new AI that will be born.

From the middle of the movie, we find out that all of Ahn-na’s pain was actually a deep learning simulation for AI. If you look at the number on her T-shirt, you can see she repeated the exact same day 21,499 times.

After facing so many obstacles, she finally finds Ja-in and proves her motherly love. This is how the data is successfully collected. For Ahn-na, it was a truly sad and cruel process.

My Review: Is the Great Flood a Disaster Movie or Human SF?

Don’t let the title fool you.

If you want a normal disaster movie like Haeundae, you might be disappointed. This movie is more of an SF drama about motherhood and technology. It reminded me of the movie Interstellar, where a father’s love for his daughter saves the world.

Instead of just showing the flood, this movie asks: ‘Can AI really learn and feel emotions taught by humans?’ It is a good movie for those who like mysteries and SF. But if you are only looking for a disaster film, you might not like the twist.

However, she shows an unusual obsession with Se-hoon himself, regretting that she did not kill him as well. If Yoon-soo’s story begins with her husband’s death, Mo-eun’s tragedy begins with her twisted connection to Se-hoon.

Yoon-soo ultimately cannot bring herself to commit murder. Yet Se-hoon is later found dead. Even though Yoon-soo did not kill him, the outcome of Mo-eun’s deal still becomes reality.

The truth is revealed: The murderer of both Yoon-soo’s husband and Se-hoon is the same person. The real culprits are lawyer Jin Young-in and his wife, Soo-yeon. Soo-yeon killed Lee Gi-dae due to a conflict over art plagiarism. Jin Young-in manipulates the case by acting as Mo-eun’s lawyer and keeping close ties to Yoon-soo’s defence lawyer as well.
